Extracted by steam distillation from the flowering tops of Sage rosmarinus Spenn. (sin. Rosmarinus officinalis L., rosemary common), evergreen shrub of the Lamiaceae typical of the macchia mediterranea, widespread from the coasts atlantic iberic up to to the Turkey and to the North Africa, prevalentely on soils calcarei assolati. Among the plants medicinal more longeve of Europe — già Dioscoride and Plinio the descrivono — the rosemary is simbolo of memory and fedeltà in the tradition western. The phytochemical profile varia significativaly among chemotypes: the CT cineole (dominant in Morocco and Spain) contains 1,8-cineole (35-50%), α-pinene and camphor (<10%); the CT camphor (France, Spain interna) has camphor (15-30%); the CT verbenone (Corsica, Sardinia) is ricco in verbenone (15-40%). In aromatherapy the properties variano for CT: the cineolic is expectorant and antiinfettive; the canforic is tonic muscular and circolatorio; the verbenonic is regenerating hepatic. Common to all the CT: stimulating action of the nervous system, miglioramento of the memory and concentration, antioxidant. Contraindicated during pregnancy, epilepsy. Heart-to-top note balsamic, fresh and aromatic.
