Extracted by steam distillation from the leaves mature of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. (common eucalyptus, blue gum), large tree of the Myrtaceae endemic of Tasmania and southern Victoria in Australia, now cultivated throughout the world warm-temperate for the production of timber, paper, essential oil and reforestation. L'eucalyptus is the decongestant respiratory natural more known and used in the world — its fragrance is a universal synonym of 'easy breathing'. The phytochemical profile is dominated by 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol, 60-85%), with α-pinene (10-15%), limonene and globulol. The 1,8-cineole has documented mechanism of action: activates the channels of the cold TRPM8, inhibits the leukotrienes and the 5-lipoxygenase, thins the bronchial mucus and has antibacterial activity with broad-spectrum activity. In aromatherapy is the expectorant and decongestant of choice for rhinitis, sinusitis, bronchitis and flu. Has also antiviral properties, immune-stimulating and analgesic. Contraindicated in children under the 3 years (risk apnea reflex). Very fresh top note, balsamic and penetrating.
Australia; widely cultivated in Spain, Portugal, China, South Africa and South America.
