Extracted by steam distillation from the parts aeree flowering of Satureja montana L. (savory montana, savory of estate), perennial herbaceous plant or suffruticous of the Lamiaceae widespread on the colline and on the monti of the Mediterranean northern on soils calcarei and sassous assolati. The savory montana is the cultivar more widespread in the tradition erboristic of the arco alpine and appenninic, where era chiamata 'herba sanitatis' (herb of the salute) in the Medioevo. The phytochemical profile is dominated by carvacrol (30-60%) and thymol (10-30%) — phenols with powerful antibacterial activity, antiviral and antifungal — with γ-terpinene, para-cimene and borneolo. The savory montana is among the oils more potentely antibacterial of the whole aromatherapy: active on batteri multiresistent, mycobatteri and biofilm. Requires diluition severa (max 0.5-1%) for the alta causticity skin of the phenols. In aromatherapy it is used as antibacterial of choice in the infections resistent, antifungal for candidiasis sistemic and skin, immune-stimulating and tonic general. Contraindicated during pregnancy and children. Top-to-heart note very warm, phenolic and robusta.
